What do you mean, handbook for hip-hop? Like it's super-ultra representative of hip-hop culture?

Think about it this way: A majority of people believe what they see in the movies. Perhaps the story is fictional, but people think the situations and environments are based on fact. This is where writers draw their inspiration -- from life.

So when you've got a real rapper with a real hard-luck story, and this movie is made that is "loosely" based on his life, as well has having a majority of people who have not been exposed to underground rap culture, they are going to think that THIS movie is IT.

I say majority because even if we're exposed to mainstream rap, it's still the pre-packaged, glossy, manufactured stuff you'll find in any genre. Who really sees the other side of things? So you have a movie that supposedly depicts those things... and --long story short--people believe the movies. Voila! That's why it's the accepted (not necessarily acceptable) answer.

Wow. That has to be the first time that I have ever heard that about 8 mile. As for it being the Handbook of Hip Hop. I would have to say "No".

This movie is partially about Eminem's past and how he got into doing rap battles. I think the movie helps people that do enjoy rapping to actually take a step up and take that opportunity.
