If you believe that Iraq was a secular country, then you're only fooling yourself. At least until after the end of the Iraq Iran war, Saddam painted himself and his regime in Jihad and martyrdom. Every radio and television broadcast out of Baghdad was all about Jihad, Saddam wouldn't be referred to in anything other than clerical regard, he redecorated the Iraqi national flag to read "God is great", he boasted about personally funding $25,000 dollars to the families of each suicide bomber in the West Bank and Gaza Strip who attacked assests of the Palestinian Liberation Organization because they were too secular, he built the largest Mosque in the region with the Quaron written, he says, in his own blood (God knows there was plenty of blood in that country to go round if he didn't want to use his own) the man who mixed the chemicals for the first world trade center bombing was being sheltered in Baghdad, Abbu Abbas, the murderer of Leon Klinghoffer was captured in Italy and was forced to be released, why? Because he was traveling on an Iraqi diplomatic passport, and was alive in Baghdad until he saw American Marines on his street and shot and killed himself. Saddam publically praised the 9/11 attacks as a blessing from God, and allowed Abu Musad Al-Zarquwi to enter Iraq and wage his Islamic Jihad against his kurdish enemies. And he was also seeking enriched uranium in Niger.

Syria has a baath government, and who are it's two biggest allies? The mullahs in Iran and hezbollah in Lebanon; it can happen.

"Homegrown" in its use via the American media implies that the Muslims/Islamists/whatevers had been honestly born and raised within the United States. They weren't immigrants (although their moms and dads will have been). They extensively utilized this time period final summer season with the persons who inspiration up that genius (learn: dull) plan for British Airways.

The problem is the Ba'ath party also was part of a single party dicatatorship, and we all well know the human rights violations that went on for years and years.
