I'm not really talking about the Republican party, because I have little respect for either party. However, I mean the ideas of old-school, or paleo, conservatism weren't bigoted, contradictory, or religiously inspired. They were pragmatic, often economically motivated, and strongly supported individual freedom.
While I may not agree with liberal ideals, I can at least respect them because they have not had an idiot equivalent to Bush destroy them yet.
My question to you is did you ever find conservatism a respectable movement? Do you now? If not, could you again?

The only thing I see about Bush that is conservative is a strong military. However, I don't believe that interventionism counts as conservatism (although in that sense, times have changed with the threat of terrorism, so who knows).

Calling Bush a conservative is like calling Collin Powell Afro-centric.
Really, he is a republican and he did get some tax cuts, but the man who let Ted Kennedy write his education bill, the president who signed into law a new entitlement- prescription drug care- is not a conservative. Remember "compassionate conservatism" - a backwards insult to fellow republicans, were conservatives not compassionate before Bush?
Liberals like to point to Bush and scream conservative to galvanize their base and to label an ideology with a recognizable figure.
Newt is a conservative
Rush is a conservative
Clarence Thomas is a conservative
GW Bush is not a conservative
We have not had a conservative president since Regan

Bush made me respect Republicans/conservatives a whole lot less, unfortunately. Now I can't think of them without Bush. Hopefully a better Republican will come into office and make me respect them more. At the moment, however, I'm not very happy with the party.

Respect, well, I guess the term conservative, yes. Republicans, no, they have always been the party of the wealthy and have always been for big busines. Not interested in that. But true conservatism, yes. I can respect that. Now I dont get why they are calling Bush a "lberal? Where does that come from? Liberal means for change, and I dont think he is about that at all. Some people are a little skewed about that.

Oh before Bush perverted the word I could respect the ideals. It is the same thing with liberals they both only want the best for their country and family both just have different ways of doing it. One isnt more right or wrong than the other they are just different. At heart both true conservatives and liberals have the best intentions.

I in fact was a republican before this bastardization of the republican party called Bush and Co. showed up.
*Small* government and *states* rights are what this country was founded upon. So, YES, conservatism was once a noble cause.

I am for smaller government, less taxes, efficient spending, a flat tax. I am a business owner and an Army veteran. I lost all trust in conservatives in the last 6 years. If they lie to me about one thing (war), they could be lying to me about everything.

Bush didn't pervert it, he has been a liberal on a lot of things, that is what has made conservatism look so bad.
I'm not a conservative by the way. Or a republican.

I would hope so I hate Communism which we really have in the USA now.
Free food and shelter for having babies out of wed-lock vs a orphanage and my tax dollars pay for other electric and I can't afford to heat my house to a decent level. One class is held above another in the form of affirmative action for hiring education etc.
These are the corner stones of communism also like the communist b4 them they are seeking to silence religion in all forms and are using quote "useful idiots" to do it.
