Researcher Jean Piaget coined the term "object permanence" (also called "object constancy"), but parents have long recognized it as what puts the fun in peekaboo. Babies who've developed object permanence (typically between 4 and 12 months) look for a toy or person hidden under a blanket because they have come to realize it still exists even when they can't see it. "Your reappearance stimulates glee in your child, because she was expecting you but couldn't see you yet," explains Lewis Lipsitt, Ph.D., founding director of the Child Study Center at Brown University. "It's a very important aspect of early childhood development."

It's the fun that caring takes someone into the baby's world. Babies don't rationalize well, and they see or don't see the gamers face off and on. The on usually saying 'peek-a-boo' really is the person coming back into view with a smile and cheerful voice. Who wouldn't like that more often!!!

Its not necessarily peekaboo I believe it is the repeated things that you do, ive tried peekaboo with mine and she doesnt really respond to it, but she likes the things that i repeat everyday, like if i laugh really loud at her she laughs back so i do that with her everyday.

It's the element of surprise and fear which through repitition makes it sort of funny and the boo is expected although not exactly when but it's still coming. It's great fun for them and it's a great way to make light of something that could be scary but they also enjoy the buzz, and it makes them bolder, confident. Also it teaches them to see the funny side of something.

Because it is fun. My nine month old baby sits by my patio windows and pulls the net curtains up over his face, then pulls them back really quickly and shouts! It has me in hysterics!!

I don't really think it's peek-a-boo, but the repetition and attention they are getting from mom or dad. My kids were never peek-a-boo fans, but loved when I'd sing or read to them even at just a few weeks old. Infants crave and need attention, it doesn't matter to them how it comes.

Peek-a-boo is not only fun but it teaches them that if you disappear that you will return that is why parents are incouraged to play it with their infants. My son is 18 months and has not tired of it yet.

Because at their age, they don't have the understanding that someone / something that has gone away way come back again, so it suprises them when you reappear. Also probably because people tend to make funny noises when they play it, so that entertains them too.

young children don't understand that when they can't see someone they're still there, that's also why they cry when mum walk out of the room, so it teaches them this and also it's a nice surprise for them and they're getting attention!
