For ease of use, I would get a non-ipod mp3 player. With an ipod, you have to use itunes. It starts limiting where you can download your music to. For example, if you like to transfer music between your home computer and work computer, itunes is very picky about where you can move your music to.
Regular mp3 players are cheaper too. You don't have to learn how to use itunes in order to get the most out of your mp3 player right away. itunes is not very versatile until you take the time to learn all of its functionalities. And this is coming from someone that knows computers very well.

This question sounds like asking "eating or pizza?" iPod is the brand for mp3 players, launched on the market by Apple. MP3 is an abstract notion commonly used, and in fact it is the extension of a compressed sound file, which stands for MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3

It is the same thing. iPod is mp3. iPod is just Apple's name for their mp3 players.
