If you are ever in any small town in America and some cities go down to the local library and look at the plaque on the building. Most likely you will find that it is a Andrew Carnegie library. Carnegie donated and built a library for any town or city that wrote him a letter and ask for one. Much the same way as Gates donates PC's to charitable organizations. Rockefeller's' foundation has funded numerous public functions. The Smithsonian Institute is funded by a dead diamond merchant. It is up to you to decide whether the means (by which they acquired their wealth) justified the ends (that the wealth is used for today).
There is a growing third category that will be entering the history books soon. Those who become wealthy by tapping into the wealth of these dead robber barons. Like Bill Clinton and James Carter who have figured out a way to live very comfortably on the charity of other infamous characters. The problem these parasites are having with Gates is that he is not dead yet. Warren Buffet has capitulated.

Problem CUrrent laws restrict us from discharging 40,000 gallons of waste water without screening and purification . This will cost us 12 million dollars . Solution --build the factory in Mexico ship out the high paid union jobs to workers for 10 dollars a day and poison them in the process . Profits go up your paycheck gets bigger and you move into that gated community with the golf course .
Why not just gather a few people together and rob a bank killing anyone who might try and stop you . Same thing as far as I am concerned .
The names you mention mean nothing to me at all .Except maybe that they were successful survivalists who took what they wanted and worried little about human life .

However jealousy makes it easy to vilify those who have more than you, so I would have to say the answer to the question is that they have helped allot of people in the real world in very real ways.
