Flowers, baby gift basket, balloons, card, baby outfit, gift certificate to a baby store, magazines, a parenting book, special gift for mom such as as scented lotion or something. Don't forget that the mom needs attention too! Often the baby gets all the focus, and the mother feels left out sometimes especially if this is the woman's first baby!

Other moms may not agree, but I found that anything given at the hospital just had to be taken to the car and hauled back home - at a time when the family is scrambling not to forget anything important in the room. Water has to be poured from flower vases so there's no spillage in the car and balloons float around and get in the way and block vision through the rear-view. I would advise taking the Mom her favorite food - whatever it is. A warm blanket, a soft fuzzy cap or a cute outfit are all great baby gifts for the hospital because they are easily transported and fit in a bag. At this time of year, the warmer the better.

Nothing is more terrifying than taking that tiny little baby out into the big cold world. Give a cozy, easily packed reassuring gift at the hospital and save the flowers, balloons and bulky items for the first home visit.

Take a beautiful card with an offer to babysit one night sometime down the road.

Trust me--I received numerous gifts, flowers, outfits for the baby, baloons, etc. after the births of my two kids, and all the presents were a huge hassle. After having a baby, parents have a one track mind--everything that doesn't relate to the baby (in an important way) is pushed by the wayside. When the person you see who had the baby is released, she's not going to give two flips about any balloons or flowers she gets--her number one main concern is going to be getting her baby out to the car and getting him home safely. Having a ton of presents to lug home makes it even more difficult and pretty annoying.

Slipping a beautiful greeting card in her suitcase or purse takes up no space and trust me--two or three months from now when she and her husband need a break, she'll find that card with the free night of babysitting from you and will be VERY grateful. :)

I would get something other people probably won't. Any flowers or teddy bears or anything like that are just annoying to take home. What would be good would be a gift card for a restaurant that does take-out or a gift certificate for a maid service. Or a gift basket with all kinds of snacks to eat when she is nursing the baby and doesn't feel like getting up- goldfish crackers, granola bars, cookies, dried fruit, etc.

The best gift that I got while I was in the hospital was totally unexpected... one of my employees got a decorative type basket, got a teddy bear, an outfit, extra socks, diapers, some bath stuff for the baby and a bath set for me... it was all pink cuz I had a girl obviously and it was such a surprise... I loved it. She also brought me in some taco bell which she had to sneak since the hospital had me on all liquids since I had a c-section. I think that what I liked the most is the thought that she put into it.
Another one of my friends brought me a girdle :) to help my stomach go back to it's normal shape (it worked too)

Get something for the baby that they can use right away, you can't really go wrong with diapers and bath stuff. But don't forget the mommy!

If you want to do something extra special, you can talk to the front nurse when you first get into the recovery section of maternity and pay for their birth announcements and take that in to them... I would've loved it if somebody did that for me. I didn't get mine out for like 3 months because I was so consumed with my baby.

Ask if the mother is hungry. Most hospital food is gross the best gift you can give to a mother in the hospital is food, lol. If not then give something like a keepsake for the baby. Some hospitals have a gift shop check there my hospitals gift shop made personalized bracelets for baby that had the name. Very sweet and a keepsake for life.

REAL FOOD!!! I craved Mac Donalds...The nurses said EVERYONE that gets hospitalized for a couply days Craves Mac. Donalds...and I dont even eat there! But I also got Take out from my favorite Chilis...you order it and pick it up for her. And it's like eating out only @ home and I loved it.

Also if she just had the baby TODAY she might need a ROBE or comfy Slippers...none slip of course. I wanted balloons and flowers myself. And those little Gum Cigars they got down at the gift shop. lol

Take a camera to take pix of baby...and offer to have them developed for mommy. Mommy might not want to be in them though...lol depending on how rough she looks!

I would suggest against bring a big pack of diapers to the hospital...remember its stressful loading and unloading the car with a TON of things...plus the hospital you with diapers until you go home.

A small outfit or diapers would be a great gift for mom and baby. You can never get enough of either with newborns. If you were looking for something for mom try flowers, or a comfy pair of slippers. Even an expensive bath soap set for her to enjoy when she gets home, anything that can help her unwind.

Flowers or a ballon I loved getting these. And maybe a little hat, blanket or mittens for the baby. UNless you want to get a big gift that is up to you. Or bring a pack or newborn diapers those are always needed.
