More specifically, who really likes trial lawyers? You know, the guys on tv commercials all the time asking if you've recently been in a wreck, been hurt, etc.

Some lawyers are honest and hardworking individuals trying to help people and support their families. They fight each day and put up with a lot of crap to pass laws that benefit you and get you money to pay your bills when you've been taken advantage of by insurance companies, businesses or joe schmo. Other lawyers are not so good. All they're interested in is themselves. Unfortunately all you hear about (or care about) are the ones that take advantage of people. There's good guys and bad guys in every line of work.

Yes those commercials are annoying but they have to advertise and get your attention to get business like everyone else does. What commercials do you really remember? The ones that are simple or the ones that are over the top and annoying?

I have been a licensed, practicing attorney for 17 years. Notice I use the term attorney instead of lawyer. An attorney is an agent, he/she helps you and represents you in legal matters. A lawyer is a person who has studied and knows the laws and I think carries a connotation of egotism or "better than you are" that I reject. Most lawyers/attorneys are articulate, pleasant people and I usually enjoy their company. The problem is that the practice of our profession requires us to sometimes separate our personal lives from our professional lives. As a result communicating with my peers on official matters can sometimes be frustrating because they won't relax and talk open and honestly with me. They instead give me their professional position on the case instead of what they really think. That kind of posturing, putting on the professional facade, I also reject. I believe in making an honest assessment of the case and stating my bottom line from the beginning. As a result, I find most of the lawyer jokes to be rather appropriate and accurate.
So, do I like lawyers? Personally yes but professionally not so much.

Lawyers as a whole are great people. Unfortunately this is one profession where the actions of a minority have cast a pall over the entire profession. Years ago lawyers did not advertise. Then it became an issue that went through the courts. Most lawyers agreed that it would cheapen the image of the profession, and it has. Due to constitutional concerns though advertising is legal.

We hate them until we need one. If you need a lawyer, contact your local bar association(the lawyers' professional society)-ask for the head of the committee for the branch of law you're concerned with(Criminal, estates, real estate, etc.)-the bar associations set these peer committees up to keep themselves up to date on the latest changes in the laws, court decisions, etc. The committee chairs are elected by their peers, and you'll get very good knowledgable help, and (hopefully) for less than an arm and a leg.

I dont like them unless I need one. If our laws were better, we really wouldnt need them. If life was fair, we wouldnt need them. If people treated each other with respect and were treated fairly, we wouldnt need them. People use them in hopes of getting rich.

Mostly criminals. There is a need for them even though most are out for money not justice.
