The current highest rated one is SpyBot. I have used it for several years, and like the current version. It tells me if spyware has gotten to the computer and is trying to get into the registry. I have the choice right then of stopping it. It's called Tea Timer, and it works great.

Ad Aware.Though it is free,it consistently rates high in most Antispyware reviews.No other free software comes close to it.And no pop ups,telling you to upgrade.

The old ewido package that AVG now offers is pretty good.
I personally prefer Spybot S&D. Nothing is stopping you from running both, though.

There are two programs that I recomend "spybot search & destroy" and "AdAware", both are great programs and free.

You can use them both at the same, which is what I do. and Spybot also has the tea timer option.

Ad-Aware by Lavasoft. Go to downoads.com and type in Ad-Aware - you can download it for free. It works by looking for data miners and tracking cookies. You can quarantine and/or remove them.

Windows Defender is pretty good because it runs in the background --- most free anti-spyware does not, you have to run it yourself.
My personal favorite is Spybot:

MYSELF I USE TWO I USE SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY AND EWIDO THEY ARE BOTH VERY GOOD.
I USE THEM BOTH, WHATEVER ONE DOESN'T CATCH THE OTHER WILL.
