Just to clarify the question- when I say table food, I'm talking about the foods you eat. ex. rice, mashed potatoes, meat, etc.

I started my son on "real food" at about 7 months. He had a couple teeth then and had figured out to mash things with his gums. I started with the Gerber biter biscuits and zwieback toast then moved on to regular breads, soft fruits and veggies then on to small bits of chicken. By one year he was eating 3 full meals a day with a cup of milk and a cup of milk before bed.

Baby food around 6 months (after cereal)
Table food around 7 months, he wanted nothing to do with baby food and wanted only what what we ate. I mashed everything up and he was as happy as could be. (watching salt, artificial sweetners etc of course)
He is doing great and in the 95th percentile for height and weight. He outeats his 10 and 13 year old brothers some times!

When my kids were able to pick up food and put it to their mouths I started table food (around 7-8 months) Nothing too hard to chew, usually green beans, cooked carrots , bananas (cut up in very small pieces), cheerios, cooked beets, scrambled eggs, etc.. I didn't give them corn or peas though until they had teeth, because of the skins. My daughter was 1 before we stopped giving her any baby food, but my son was eating everything we ate by 10 months (he was the second child). I just made sure to watch them for a while so they didn't stuff their mouths, and everything was cut bite size.

I started with baby oatmeal at about 5 months, mixed with formula to a very thin consistency. After six months, I started introducing a new food every week, keeping an eye out for allergic reactions.

After a few months. I actually was eating a brown sugar cinnamon pop tart when my son was about a month old and I put it to his mouth. He started licking the cinnamon sugar part...it was the cutest thing in the world.

The doctor should tell you when your baby can start eating table food.
