It makes some people sad, and people spend LOADS of money on gifts that most people don't need. Isn't that a waste of resources?

This is the celebration of the true Messiah and Saviour and the greatest Prophet of all JESUS CHRIST.
It doesn't matter what religion you are and what you believe. This is a season of light, love, peace and understanding.

The commercialism is a bit much though.

I suppose you are right in a way but the things people do at Christmas generally make them happy as well as others. It's a wonderful time of year and so why not? Its less silly than Thanksgiving where we celebrate eating with the Indians before we systematically annihilate them, or New years (what is so special about the calendar turning?) Don't even get me started on Valentines day. How did Easter turn into chocolate bunnies and purple baby chickens? Of them all, I think Christmas is the most significant celebration of the year. And you can enjoy it without spending money if you wish, people do.

Obviously, it was never the intention of Christmas to satisfy greed. People manage to do that, and they don't need Christmas to be greedy. Christmas is what you make of it within your own heart. It is the observed birthday of Jesus Christ. Though some biblical scholars agree that he may have been born in March, or early spring. Christmas is a time for sharing what we have with those who have nothing or very little. It is supposed to be a time to forgive each other and enjoy each other's company. Gift giving is in memory of the gifts of the Magi, the three wise men who bore gifts to the Christ child and his parents. That we as people have taken the whole gift giving thing to it's ugliest state is our fault as a people. But we can also control that if we want to.
Thoughtful gifts are always appreciated more. They require you to spend time getting to know the recipient and what pleases them. But it's the spirit you feel when you give the gift that should matter most. Happy Holidays.

not entirely. It is great to spend time with loved ones catching up playing games and so on. Some who get sad have noone to be with and they are the ones in need of a few great friends. Yes people do go overboard on shopping and spending money then take it out in bad ways on others when they are shopping or going out to eat then finding out there cards do not work for they hit there daily spending limit or they maxed out there card. people get to into spending and not into just enjoying and loving there closest friends and family

Dear my friend,,
I don't think that Christmas is a silly occasion,, why?

Cause it's something bring joy full and happiness to the lonely and sad hearts. what i consider as silly is to spend money without aims. cause in this time of year which comes only once a year, people must used this occasion to help old persons, sick children etc,.
Although I'm a Muslim but i respect other religions,,, and helping each other to ease pain is the perfect aim of any religion in any occasion.

Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus. So the answer to your question, is: No, Christmas is not a silly holiday. What's sad is that many people do not know the true meaning of Christmas. What is silly is how exhausting and commercialized it has become.

I think it's extremely important to celebrate, in the darkest, coldest, hardest, dreariest time of year, hope, light, life, caring, giving, and community.

Some people do go overboard unnecessarily, but that's an issue of self-regulation. I don't consider it a waste to celebrate joy when things are hard. I cling to this when things are tough for me.

No. It is the one time of the year when we behave like we ought to. (Not shopping and beating each other up for parking spaces) but family time and good attitudes.

in no way :) My female chum made me a headscarf with smilies on it and that i like it, its heat and its very considerate :) I placed on it known or maybe even with the undeniable fact that some people chuckle and chuckle i do no longer care by using fact its some thing she took the time to make for me, merely for me, and that makes it particular and makes me sense very enjoyed, so its no longer stupid or strange, its candy..and considerate and trustworthy :) I say choose for it ^_^
