Lewis and Clark made their exploration in 1805, so this would be in the very early 19th century. In 1792 Captain Robert Gray entered the Columbia and named it after his ship, the Columbia Rediviva. The ship was chartered to profit from the fur trade and the traders who hunted in the area. In the summers the native peoples fished for salmon, so perhaps the entry of the ship into the river or the interations with the fur hunters is the answer to your question.

More on the Columbia Redivivia:
"Captain and crew spent about a week or so trading for furs with the Indians, leaving without investigating the river further."
