They TRIED to make him gay, back in the 80's. Shortly after Crisis on Infinite Earths, when they revamped Superman and the whole DC universe, Myxzptlk took away his powers by magic, but made a hunk of fake 'red kryptonite' which he gave to Luthor. Luthor exposed him to the fake 'kryptonite' and Superman was powerless. The idea was, Superman couldn't have his powers back unless he could get Luthor to tell him how he did it.

During this time, they started to use a storyline which had been considered but put on the shelf. There was a new hero called Starman, who radiated stellar energy. Since Superman gets his powers from the rays of the sun, they figured that Superman would feel 'good' whenever he was near Starman, and not know why... and they would eventually develop a 'friendship'.

With his powers gone, Superman asked Starman if he would try recharging him with solar energy. They tried, but because it was due to Myx's magic, it didnt work. (There would have been an outrage if Superman had started to pretend to like Starman, in order to leech off the stellar energy in his body.)

Oh, and his powers...? Clark Kent cornered Luthor and demanded to know how he did it, since Superman had examined the piece of fake 'kryptonite' and found out it was just a rock. Luthor wanted to boast of it to someone, but he made clear to Kent that if he published it, he would find his own reputation ruined.

Luthor didn't realize Kent was Superman, but Myx did, and considered that cheating. So he restored Superman's powers.

Now that Superman is married to Lois (and they do the things that married people do...!) there is no longer any question of Superman being gay.

Just because he wears tight tights and speaks with a high pitched voice does not mean he is gay.

No, surely not. Everyone is entitled to wear tights without being labelled as a 'packer of fudge'.

Just look at Julian Clary - he's definately not gay, is he?
