I need to write a research paper (8 pages) on the topic of cars. Since the topic "cars" is too broad, i need to narrow it down.

Could someone help me out with some topic ideas?

Do a paper on the history of one make like Mustangs or your favorite car.

How about one a manufacturer like Ford, Chevy, or Cadillac..Tell about the history of the company from past to the future..Saturn would be a good one for that too..

How about a paper on the new "non-gas" powered cars..Tell about the electric cars and some of the other ideas being talked about today to save gasoline..

Talk about the differences (advantages/disadvantages) of a Manual and Automatic transmission..OR cars vs. trucks vs. SUV's

How about the impact of motor exhaust on our environment..And what states are doing about it..And what laws have been passed to protect our air..

Maybe you can even talk about "Who" and "When" the automobile was invented..That may be interesting?..

Talk about how the US uses cars vs. how other countries use cars..

I generally suggest that my students start with a problem that needs to be solved. That way you can give background information, discuss causes and effects, and analyze proposed suggestions for solving the problem. Consider the problem (or concern) and begin to ask probing questions. These questions will help you to begin a search.

In the general topic of cars one of the major areas of concern is safety. What has been done in the past 10 years to improve the safety of American automobiles? How effective have these measures been? This too may be too broad depending on the information that you can find. Perhaps you would narrow your topic down to one safety measure like airbags. How effective are they? How available? What are the dangers? How many people have died as a result of having the air bags? Would these people likely have died anyway?

Another possible topic is the question of affordability of cars. The cost keeps going up. What problems does this pose for those at the lower end of the economic scale? How much does it cost for a "good" used car? How much will a person likely pay in repairs? What about lost wages when a car is unreliable? What about other forms of transportation--do they put someone at a disadvantage in the work place?

Other possible topics are cars and teenage or senior drivers, cars and pollution, cars and the economy, the future of cars. These are my quick answers. Think for a while, and I'll bet you could come up with more. Try reading through the local newspaper and looking for any articles related to cars. Then consider what possible topics might come out of those articles.
