I work in a small office of 6 people. We have one receptionist who is responsible for phones, filing, signing for deliveries, occasional walk-in sales, and permitting. She has also taken it upon herself to also be the computer tech department in place of the office manager who was doing it. She does not dress according to company dress code. Wears t-shirts, jeans, sneaker, no makeup, no jewelry. Company dress code is jacket, blouse, skirt/slacks, closed toe shoe. She is very fat...about 400 pounds.
At lunch time everyone leaves for lunch, but not at the same time. The thing is she leaves for lunch leaving the phones unattended, noone to cover deliveries or walk-in sales. The walk-in sales usually take place during lunch and she is the only one authorized to handle them. I get complaints occasionally from walk-in customers that there was no one in the office who could help them. Despite all this everyone in the office loves her, including the corporate office. (to be continued..)

The company president and vice-president know how she is because they visit this office at least once a week. She does not change how she dresses when they visit.
Is there anything I can do about her?

skcs69: Been there, done that. Discussed it with the manager who says that 99% of the complaints are about calls going to voicemail.
owllady: I can make her "office life" a living hell, even if it is immature. I've insulted her more that once. She doesn't have the guts to take anyone to court.
J*Mo: A big LOL for you! I can't imagine ANYONE letting her do them. She's too damned ugly. Ugly enough to where she would have to PAY for the privilege to do them.
Pittsburg: Her dress bugs me because the receptionist should be dressed nicely, not like a slob.
ModelFlyer: Everyone in jeans/t-shirt. Receptionist should not be permitted to dress this way b/c 1st person everyone sees. Don't know why everyone loves her. She has a "bubbly" personality...it grates on my nerves to no end.
IWin: You suck.

john r:
(1) She's been here 1 year.
(2) No excuse. There are a couple of women at the corporate office who are very overweight. They both wear suits, hose, and high heels every single day.
(3) She is the one who initiated the staggered lunches because she complained about having to spend her lunch break answering the phone. IMO, that is her JOB...to answer the phone.
(4) That's the problem. She isn't a good employee. If she was there wouldn't be any complaints.
(5) She knows the dress code. Her first month or so here she was wearing pant suits and dresses. Then she slacked off. I don't think she cares about her health. If she did she wouldn't be a fat slob.
(6) I'm not going to tell her that because I don't think she is doing a good job. ..and I don't like her.

First problem at hand is who hired her and how long ago. This determines any action legally needed to initiate the termination process if that course of action is necessary.

2) Her weight is obviously preventing her from being able to conform to dress codes. Clothing is not designed for overweight people. She should do something about her weight but legally you have no right to make mention of it unless she initiates the conversation.

3) She has been allowed to do as she pleases. She tested the waters and has learned to what extent she can use her power. Now you either discuss a rearangement of her breaks or deal with what has been allowed to progress.

4) Good employees are hard to find. Weigh out the good and bad before angering yourself and creating disharmony in the office. this will get nothing accomplished.

5 Plan A course of action, a meeting to discuss the changes in her schedule for breaks. reveiw the company dress code. Let her know she is not exempt from this. She may voluntarily offer the weight problem issue to come up. This is your cue to jump in and form a discussion about it. Let her know there is a concern because of the negative health isues for herself. Any way the company can help her? Discuss but don't force her to comply with the clothing code. She may get the picture after you eplain the importance of pesonal appearance at the front desk.

6) let her know she is doing a good job and is well liked. Try to reach an amicable agreement on the break issue.

I see you didn't bother to mention how everyone else in the office is dressed. Does everyone wear jeans/t-shirt? If so, then you have no right to be complaining about her. You also didn't mention WHY everyone in the office loves her. There has to be a reason for it. What about her attitude, good or bad? You didn't mention that either.
As far as the lunch thing goes, everyone is entitled to a break. Either get over it or offer to fill in while she is out.

I'm confused as to why you care so much about someone else's personal appearance, I've worked as a receptionist before and i understand that she is only one person, if the phones need to be covered at all times than someone needs to be available to relieve her for lunch, bathroom breaks, smoke breaks, etc. She also should have been told about how she's expected to dress upon hire. If this is a huge problem someone will put a stop to it, but until than just worry about how your work is being done.

A lot of firms will ask wherein you anticipate to be in five years time, they ask this to support them of their determination to peer in case you have a plan or for those who say you do not know they are going to realize that you're now not making plans to stick on the organization for lengthy. they ask approximately individual characteristics to peer how you're in speakme to men and women, if you're protective they could now not wish to rent you when you consider that it could make you appear unhelpful to consumers who name the organization and nobody likes a impolite receptionist or one that talks at the cellphone to her peers or performs along with her hair. Assuming men and women are dull isn't a well begin peculiarly with the sort of task that you're going for. A receptionist is among the first men and women you notice whilst going for walks right into a organization, make the men and women think welcome and confidently you are going to have a well cellphone process and good dressed, steer clear of tight becoming matters and garish nail polish.

Since you are not the boss, there is not much you can do. And with her being over weight, you must be careful that you don't insult her or she could take you to court for discrimination. If she is good at her job, and the corporate office has no problem with her then my advice to you is to grin and bare it. It will probably work itself out. Usually people who are morbidly obese have major health problems. Just be patient my friend.
