I can't think of what a proper noun- thing is.
I realize that Holidays and Ideas or even Sacred objects are capitalized. But what else is considered a proper noun thing?

What criteria do I use to find out?

Are animals considered things?

A noun that picks out a unique entity is a proper noun.
Examples of proper nouns include:

1. John
2. the United Nations
3. Paris
and examples of common nouns are:

1. man
2. organization
3. country

Proper nouns cannot be preceded by words like "the" and "a" and other indefinite articles. An indefinite article (English a, an) is used before singular nouns that refer to any member of a group.

A proper noun is like the Name of a person, place, thing, or idea.
Also the title of a noun (e.g. Doctor). You should be able to look up proper noun in the dictionary.
