It really depends on what you call "New World" and what you call "country". Most people would say the Vikings (who could be said to be from many places, but I'll say Norway) were the first. L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada is considered by the United Nations to be the first European settlement in the New World.

You could make arguments for several other possibilities, though. Most people agree that the first inhabitants of the Americas came from Russia to Alaska. While they were likely from the Asian part of Russia, since "Europe" isn't really a continent, an argument could be made for Russia.

Since the Viking settlements were abandoned, some others argue that the Spanish were the first to settle the New World. The truth is we can never really know the answer to the question.

I believe that the vikings who had a settlement in Vinland (Newfoundland) came there from Greenland and got to Greenland from Iceland. They moved further west setting up colonies as they went. Greenland took, Iceland took, Vinland didn't take...

There are apochryphal stories that claim Portugeuse fisherman followed the currents over to fish along the American coast too, but I don't think they set foot on land. And there are also old legends of an Irish saint (St. Breandan) who sailed across the Atlantic to the Americas.

But the vikings are historical fact!

Well the Vikings landed in New Foundland (now Canada) but the Spanish it was what became the Dominican Republic and Haiti (the Island of Espanola).
