I found it amusing to read that Dubai, a predominantly Muslim country, has got an enormous decorated Christmas tree plus nativity scene plus lots of lights and decorations.
Britain, a predominantly Christian country, can't. D'oh! It's mad.
As for plain common sense.... Unfortunately common sense isn't that common any more. That's why we have people like 'Lawyers4U' and a huge rise in personal accident claims!

Society has defined certain behaviors to be unacceptable. Violate those generally unspoken laws and face the consequences.
If they bother you, then the best method of dealing with them is to avoid them and all situations which draw attention to them. Change the subject, change the activity, withdraw from the interactions for a moment. Never devote your resources/earned wealth to activities which offend you, but instead politely withdraw from and avoid such requests.
If you don't avoid and disengage from them, you enter confrontational situations which are likely to burn a whole lot more bridges than they build (much more harm than good results).
