Good question and one I ask myself frequently. I think for one thing many of us are over-sensitive. We put way too much effort into wondering what other people think of us and wondering why they think that way. Also, as was already stated 'self-esteem' plays a role in it. For a lot of people it's a lifelong struggle to see beyond other peoples opinions of us, particularly if they are negative and unfounded. What I try to do is appreciate the value of my own opinion of myself which is, ulimitely, what matters. It's not easy but I continually remind myself of all my greatest qualities.

we're social creatures, and usually keep in packs, basic instinct riding there, but if we think that others deem us weak, it's only a matter of time before being ejected from said pack. This kind of thinking influences us to take the judgments and criticisms of others personally and not just as passing thoughts.

Another factor is the importance of the other person's opinion vs. a random stranger's, people we care about hurt us more, while someone unknown to us would generally hurt less.

This kind of thought train can be used to help us and most of the time hurt us, especially if they're the kind of person who solely feeds themselves on the opinions of others rather then base it off their own thoughts of self image.

I don't think people should let other's opinion determine what they should do, unless they agree that it is very good advise or judgement. Everyone doesn't have all the answers, but at times it is good to get a second opinion. Gives you choices to choose from if you are scared to make one your own. Not everyone is going to steer you the wrong way.

There is an explanation for that. We, as girls, get so insecure with ourselves mostly because of the outlandish examples of beauty and fitness materialized in the media by men. They use their imaginations to dream up their idea of perfection, When you put that together with those skinny, made-up, botox, silicon-crazy girls in the media and the fact that we haven't been taught that it's alright to be exactly who we are. It's not hard to see where the insecurity comes in.

Because first of all we are our own worst critic. Then there are times when people in our lives tell us in words the things about ourselves that we have already mentally beaten ourself up for a hundred times and then we sometimes think that maybe they are right. It can be a form of mental abuse.

Because until we actually know what we're worth, we have nothing else to base it on. Some people just learn their worth sooner than others.

We do and we claim we don't care what other people think, often at the same time.
At first it was a way to orient but slowly it lost its adequacy and i do less and less care what people think.
Often no one thinks nothing.
Its a mistake to believe one self to be so interesting.

I personally don't. I know who I am, and what matters to me is that the ones I love know it too. The rest doesn't matter, I never looked for anyone's praise or approval and never minded to break a rule everytime I considered it a wrong one.

Insecurity will bring us down every time that we hear a bad opinion of ourselves.

Because sometimes, others see better than we do. We might be madly in love with someone, and see it as nothing but love, but others might see our behavior as not love but obsession.
