For Word, Excel, and the other Microsoft Office products, an eMachine does the job. Just make sure you have at least:

2.6Ghz cpu
at least 512MB of memory
at least 120GB-160GB disk drive
CD reader/burner
DVD reader/burner or a
CD/DVD combo burner
a 17-inch or 19-inch LCD monitor
good quality printer

Most eMachine bundled systems include the LCD monitor and printer, but you can just buy the system with NO lcd monitor or printer. That way, you can replace your old system and keep your current LCD monitor and printer (if you choose to do so).

I recommend 1GB of memory, because if you will be creating PowerPoint slides and Visio 2003 diagrams, you will need the extra memory space.

Most eMachines have what's called a "integrated video controller". This integrated video uses a dedicated portion of your memory to display video, so that's why I suggested the 1GB of memory.

Check out these sites to compare/decide which eMachine computer you would like:

Sorry about that.

Anyway, good luck on your next computer purchase.

Well the main question is a laptop or desktop? But on either note I personaly do not like eMachines I'd stay with HP/Compaq or go with a dell. Both companies offer good computers for cheap. And with what you want to do you won't have to fork out all that much money. But I would recommend no less than these stats on a new computer.
512mb ram. Reason is this is the recommanded ram for xp. If anything I would go with 1gb or more. All this does is allows you to have more stuff open at once. Good for school work.
Really any other options for computers out there won't cause you any problems with xp office.

I've owned an eMachine for three years, and the only problem I had to date was the CDR drive had to be replaced. Overall it's been really good, problem free. Any computer can run Word, Excel. Maybe some other people have other recommendations. Good luck at school.

Emachines are the most absolute worst PC Computers to ever own!!! Seriously, save your money and build a Computer (it's cheaper). You get the parts that you want, rather than buying a customized desktop at the store.

A lot depends on what you want to use them for. When eMachines came out several years ago they were pretty low in quality and dependability but they have been around now for several years and have improved a great deal. They sometimes cut cost with lower quality cases and keyboards but most of that is just cosmetic. Most of their components are fine and they should work very good for most home use.

Yes mine works great.

The monitors last about 2 years so get the extended warranty. Mine went out a week before it expired so I got a new one for free.

In my experience with emachines I have to say it would be fine for what you need it for. I purchased mine for school purposes also, it hasn't failed me yet. Check with Wallie World for the best price on one.
