3.2 Mhz Processor
120 Gb Hard Drive
1 Gb Ram
Window Home (Upgrade to Vista when it comes out)
512 MB Video Card
The standard sound card will work
Get the DVD Burner but you might want NERO to burn your DVD but not what HP offers. So you might want to get it later.

This will work as long as you don't want major gaming...

If you store a lot of pictures and songs you will want a large hard drive, say 200 gigabytes or larger. More ram will hasten downloads. I have 2 gigs in my desktop. You may want at least 1 gig. Other than that you can add video or sound cards. You don't list the specs of the computer. For $500 you may get a 150 HDD and 528 meg of ram, or about 1/2 gig.

When you are ready to buy a new system, go to www.stupidcheapcomputers.net. I buy all of my stuff from them, and everything is Vista ready.

Microsoft is about to release its latest operating system, Vista, in January. It’s going to make all of these “bargain” computers nothing but JUNK as soon as it’s released. The reason that you are seeing so many cheap systems on the market right now is because a lot of them CAN’T RUN Vista and the merchants are trying to dump them as hard and fast as they can before Vista shows up and everyone learns what a piece of crap they were sold for $500 (or whatever).

Anyway, I bought a complete, new system from stupidcheapcomputers.net with a warranty for LESS than it would cost me to build it myself or order a custom one from the manufacturer. You can use my frequent buyer code: ATX926. That will get an additional 10% discount at checkout.

I have NEVER had any problems with anything that they have sold me and their customer service is outstanding. Those guys blow my mind.

Good luck!

I dont use brand PC, I only use clone (I have to update or change my PC by every 6 month bcuz I am a gameworm!)
Here is my suggestion:
1.Processor:You dont need a powerful one.Equal or a little more than 1.5 ghz will do all of ur works fine. You should take amd athlon.
2.Motherboard:Buy a compatible one.If u buy amd processor,then look for nforce chipset.
3.RAM:256 will be fine but if u can, use another 128.
4:HDD: U need a good hdd,atleast 160 gb.(use sata)
5:Video card: It is no important on ur work.U can use onboard video.(32 or 64)
6:ROM:a DVDRW from any good brand.(ask for +).I suggest buying another DVDROM for playing movies.Playing movies randomly with DVDRW will destroy it.
Thats all.dont spent too on a new pc,cuz it will get old soon!
GooooooodLuck!!!

My suggestion is stay away from Celeron processors. Cheap cost = cheap results. 512MB memory is good, the more the better. Music can eat up HD space but drives are getting cheaper. Suggest 200+MB HD to start. I prefer Intel processors.

i anticipate you do no longer desire this pc for gaming, so which you're able to desire to extra often than not seek for distinctive RAM, additionally you probably did no longer say how plenty you recognize approximately computers, in case you have by no potential build a equipment your self, i do no longer advise to construct this way of equipment your self. in case you're extra often than not searching for a severe end equipment for pictures and velocity, pre-build gaming systems will continually conceal your desires. the fee of those systems can variety from $one thousand to $2500 with out demonstrate screen counting on the ability of the equipment. Photoshop and Illustrater are RAM hogs, so i prefer to advise to flow with gaming systems. those systems are designed to have distinctive RAM and pictures help. you're able to be happy with a low to mid variety Gaming equipment on your desires.
