They are basically a ego or "see what I've done!" thing. They don't buy you anything or serve any other purpose. You get points by achieving different things in different games. Might be because you finished a game on hardcore setting, or finished a level in a certain amount of time... or any number of other reasons. The points you have earned are yours to keep forever. And they are always next to your gamertag for others to see. You can also select other players and compare games, and this is done by showing their points along with yours. It's just a neat feature.

Just for bragging points, for the most part. When you do certain things in a game that meet the criteria of the programmers (finish a level in a certain period of time, kill so many enemies on screen, etc..), you will gain these points.

I must point out that these points can be misleading, as a higher score does not necessarily mean you are a better gamer than someone else. Not all games share the same level of difficulty, and some give more points than others for simplistic accomplishments.

Fun, but not really anything useful, per se..
