If you search" DSM symptoms of autism" on the internet it explains the criteria that a child must meet to be considered autistic. I'm not sure if symptoms of stress are at all similar to autism. If your child is head banging or hurting him/herself, (you should see a doctor) but it could be a sign of frustration especially if he or she can't talk yet. Higher functioning autistic children usually display classic signs such as little or no eye contact, lack in social motivation, obsessive compulsive tendencies, hand flapping or other self pleasing activities and they usually experience visual and sound sensitivity. Even children with asperger's display similar symptoms.

By taking them to an expert in child psychology. NOT by asking a bunch of strangers on 'Yahoo questions' who's credentials (or lack thereof) you will never know for sure.
