I've just wondered how it is that someone who is dirt poor and looking for help and everything else can afford monthly internet access. That doesn't come cheap at all. Anyone else who was seriously lacking in funds would have those services cut off, and it happens every day. Shelter, clothing, food and transportation should be the #1 priorities. Once those are taken care of, everything else is a luxury.

I've noticed the same thing happening in everyday real life too.

It just doesn't happen at the holidays. Unfortunately, quite a few folks think the world owes them a living and would rather scam or beg for things then use the American way of actually working for them.

Unfortunately yes. But it isn't just at the holidays. Most charities, even the big ones, spend way over half of everything they bring in on themselves and running the business, because that is what they are, a business. Give locally, where you can see the result or keep track of your donation. We try to help the world, but we should fix our problems first, then work out and fix others. Be careful who you donate too, but do not let this stop you from donating.

_Here_, it's not too hard for a free older computer to be found (via www.freecycle.org, say), and one can get free net access via the FreeNet (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free-Net).

Or people can just log on at the library.

I think considering 'everything else beyond shelter, clothing, food and transportation' a 'luxury' in the western world might be uncharitable to the point of being 'abuse of charity.'

I live in a small community where lots of people don't make much money, but many of them smoke, drink beer, and play slots. I live near Vegas.
Many of these same people are the ones asking for a handout at the holidays.
I was born of a father that was a kid during the depression and a mother that was a young girl during WW2. They would shake their heads at these fools.

If someone can afford monthly internet access, then their priorities are in the wrong place and do not deserve help for the holidays. You have to help yourself before you can expect help from others. Until you help yourself, you deserve no help from others.
