You can throw them away, but if you have a lot of rainfall in your area, "sprinkle" it on your lawn or garden; it replaces a lot of the nutrients that are washed away with rain. Just don't do it on a windy day! (If you're concerned about the environment when it comes to throwing them away, don't be. It's not bad for landfills at all. Think of forest fires and how "nutritious" the ash left behind is for the new shoots.)

When the ashes are completely cool, spread them on your lawn or in the garden. They replace the nutrients. It's nature's fertilizer.
Did you know that you can also use them to clean your fireplace doors. Just by dipping a moist paper towel or newspaper in the ashes, and wipping the doors, instead of chemical cleaners, you have a natural product that cleans smoked glass doors to a perfect shine.

Stand over a little bridge or something similar and act as if you are carrying out the final wishes of a loved one and lovingly throw the ashes into the wind. Okay if you dont have that type of sense of humor....... You can compost them Merry Christmas!

I don't know what the the best way to dispose of them is, I usually just dump mine on my garden plot from the summer and early fall. Doesn't seem to hurt anything, plus the cows like to lick them-yuck!

Don't do like my ex. She put them in a trash bag on the carpet and they were still hot :(. Spread them on say the back yard or just throw them in the trash.

The garden. Simply bury them in the back yard. This works very well if they are still hot.
