My daughter age 29 will be driving her car from the east coast to the midwest in 1 day. How safe are the rest stops along the way and would you have her stop at restaurants and gas stations instead? When researching this question I noticed that there is a movie called "Rest Stop" Will this just add to the sickos all ready out there?

As long as your daughter remains alert and follows smart safety practices, she'll be fine. Suggest that she stops at truck stations like the Flying J ones. Lock her doors everytime she leaves the car and stay in well-lit areas in view of several people. Fast food places also usually have bathrooms easily available and with thin enough walls that a yell would alert others.
Also, I have heard recommended many times that if someone attacks you, do not yell help but "fire". People are more likely run towards you and potentially scare off your attacker. I know that sounds odd, but when you think about it, there's plenty of sense.

About the movie, there'll always be idiots who get ideas from movies, but watching doesn't cause people to act on ideas they are not already attracted to.

only save in thoughts the protection of your son and do what you sense is nice. Your sister should be understanding for your opinion and appreciate it. What occurs the only time you modify your thoughts and some thing occurs. i'm a scout chief and we emphasize to parents the chum gadget even if or not they're there with the be sure, someone nonetheless accompanies the youngster, and because that is is extra apt for a baby going into the ladies restroom is is a lot safer than a lady going right into a mens restroom

I guess it depends where its located, will there be alot of people around at the same time she's going to be there? Is it brightly lit?
One more point.... how street smart is your daughter? Would she know what to do or react in a situation where she might be confronted or otherwise? She should be fine as long as she keeps her eyes open and uses the instincts that GOD gave her........ like OPRAH says DOUGHT MEANS DON'T!

I'd suggest to her that stopping at a fast food restaurant for the pit stop is way safer and smarter nowadays.

Don't know about back east but out west, as long as it is day use and not overnite . . . they are usually OK.
But since she has to stop for gas anyway , why use the old rest stops ?

I don't travel like your daughter plans to travel but if I did, I would only stop at restaurants, hotels, etc. - places where there are other people around.

Make sure she checks out the place before she gets out of her car. Theres alot you can tell just by looking. Make sure its well lit with alot of people walking around. Doesnt hurt to have mase or sometype of weapon, even a gun.
