There are two distinct rainy periods...April and October. However being a Caribbean island it is in the hurricane zone which runs from June 1 to November 30 of each year. Jamaica may have in this region the best drinking water, however in densley populated areas like a number of cities across the island, one would not juts turn on a tap on the streets.

There are no shots required generally, however, in an island where 2.7 million people live, 45 cases of malaria have just been reported...you might want to take the necessary precautions.

The cases have been reported in a small geographic area in the south western area of the city of Kingston. No real threats to the general public. Efforts are being made by the Ministry of Health to handle the malaria cases.

depending on were you are on the island, for eg;Portland is the wettest place in Jamaica, in some years rainfall totals have been measured to as high as over 400"inches! in the parish, making it one of the wettest places in the western Hemisphere.
But overall the entire north coast receives rainfall,on and average over a 100 inches a year, because its the windward side of the island, especially in Portland, as i have mentioned which is in the north east.but on most days without a disturbance you will receive out burst of thunder storms that are short and brief on the coast or near the coast but heavier as you move inland in the mountains, especially in the cockpit country.
Kingston however averages less than a 100 inches a year,as it is on the south coast,or leeward side of the island.
There are time in January or February when the tale ends of cold fronts from north America will push laden moist air to the east of the greater Antilles causing immense rainfall at times,so be a ware.
But the greatest amount of rain fall that may accrue is in the hurricane season and middle September and Oct through to the end of November,at least where i am from which is St James that's the pattern. good luck.

As Steve-O points out, it mainly rains during hurricane season.

However, as with the entire world, the weather patterns are changing due to global warming and in the eastern part of the island, it has been raining more and more during what used to be the dry season. The good news is the places you are most likely to go as an American tourist are *not* in the eastern part of the island.

No, no shots needed.

Yes, it does rain a lot, but it is short bursts of warm rain. I didn't get shots before I went, but our stay was short and sweet (only a day). If you stay longer than a day, I would get shots. Don't drink the water there - bring bottled water AND don't be like me and order a soda with ice cubes. I got sick because I thought soda was fine, but I didn't even think about the ice cubes not being "safe". Have fun!

It doesn't rain alot except during the hurricane season, our water is fine nothing is wrong with it, if you are sicky sicky or allergic to everything then drink bottled water (we sell all brands here). Shots are not necessary.
