I can think of 2 things that might cause this.

A problem with your fuel gauge. Could be reading high and you may be running out of fuel. A simple way to check. The next time this happens, note how much fuel it takes to fill the tank full. If it is the same as the fuel capacity in your owners manual, the fuel gauge is incorrect.

More likely, there is a leak in the fuel pickup tube going from the fuel pump, located in the fuel tank, to the fuel pickup in the bottom of the tank. The leak is allowing the fuel pump to suck air, making your engine run poorly.

Unless you are skilled at auto repairs, I would bring the car to a reputable mechanic as the repair requires you to remove the fuel tank and the fuel pump located inside the fuel tank. Opening the fuel tank can be extremely dangerous if you don't know what you are doing.

Sounds like the float in the tank is sticking when it only has 1/4 tank. there isn't much you can do short of draining and pulling the tank. On some Ford cars, you can get to the tank from underneath the back seat but that's a job for a good mechanic.

maybe you should get your gauge checked because maybe it isnt correct and you are actually running out of gas and that is why it is acting like it is going to stall.
