Yes and no. The author, Roald Dahl, was fending off a nervous breakdown at the time he wrote the book. His son had a near fatal accident because he [Dahl] wasn't paying attention. Supposedly, he went on to write this trip of a book for therapeutic purposes. Mr. Dahl's inspiration may be considered folklore. But James and the Giant Peach was, indeed, his story.

"James and the Giant Peach" was written by Roald Dahl, who also wrote "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." The guy has a pretty vivid imagination, so I'm betting it was just an idea that he transferred from his head to paper.
