The Twelve Days of Christmas is probably the most misunderstood part of the church year among Christians who are not part of liturgical church traditions. Contrary to much popular belief, these are not the twelve days before Christmas, but in most of the Western Church are the twelve days from Christmas until the beginning of Epiphany (January 6th; the 12 days count from December 25th until January 5th). In some traditions, the first day of Christmas begins on the evening of December 25th but the following day is considered the First Day of Christmas (December 26th).

The first day of Christmas is, obviously, Christmas Day itself, i.e. December 25th. This makes January 5th the 12th day. But that's a problem, because January 6th (Epiphany) is usually considered the date of "Twelfth Night". I think this is more of that strange date counting that leads to there somehow being three days between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. One thing's for sure, however: the 12 days of Christmas come AFTER Christmas. AFTER. NOT before. (I'm so sick and tired of people who take their decorations down before the new year. I'm also perplexed by Christmas-tree disposal schedules where the last collection day is January 2nd.)
