I would suggest getting him a bank card from your bank. They can be for any amount you wish. They can be used just like a regular credit/debit/ATM card - just about anywhere, from online to Dunkin' Donuts, to most stores. It's the perfect gift...no returns/exchanges and they can get what they want...no guessing on your part. I love to wrap it up in a great big box for my 9 year old nephew and my siblings. I think one of the best gifts for a 17 year old is a subscription to buy online music. That is, if the kid has an MP3 player.
Also, handheld video games are cool...or a gift certificate to a great store that he likes.

Easy thing is a gift card from a book/music store, media/electronics place like Bestbuy. I have a 18 and 16 yr old, gift cards work great. Main problem with teenagers is the likes and dislikes can change daily.
