Corsets have been in use for centuries, actually. For each time period, the corset changed shape for the fashions of the time; corsetry was still popular for common wear into World War I.

AS for popularity -in Victorian decades, they were a MUST. Even prostitutes wore corsets as part of everyday wear. There were even maternity corsets. which would actually help women's back problems today. A properly worn corset gives form, shape and uplift, without damaging the internal organs or causing shortness of breath. What we mainly hear about are the fashion foolish who wore corsets too tight.

Corsets were also known as stays.

Here's an excellent site - shows the different time periods, and the styles popular - http://laracorsets.com/History_of_the_corset_001_Start_page.htm
