This answer might look silly, but I have a reason for that.
My favorite all time baseball player is a guy named Joe Ferguson, who was a catcher for the Dodgers back in the 70's and then became a coach for the Astros. Why is that? Simple. I'm from Venezuela, and back in 1.973 this guy played winter ball for my local team, the Caracas Lions (where loads of major leaguers have played before they became stars). The very first time my dad took me to a ballgame (I was 9), Ferguson hit two homers and drove in six runs. I became a baseball fan that Sunday afternoon and began following Ferguson's actions. Next year he became the regular catcher for the Dodgers and they went to the World Series (where they lost to the A's). He was reason why I started following the game. I played baseball for 30 years, own a large collection of memorabilia and have written a few articles on local newspapers.
Out of the great ballplayers, however, Cal Ripken would be my favorite. No one showed more dedication to the game than he did.

Ted Williams.
Not only was he a spectacular baseball player but he was a true American Hero as well. He had two stints in the service during WW II and the Korean War. There are a lot of people that say if his career hadn't been interrupted by the Wars he would have owned most of that days records.
Funny thing about that is he played for the Anti-Yankees, the Boston Red Sox.

Babe. You just have to love the big lug. Best hitter all time and what a personality.
However, if you are talking about since I've been watching baseball I would probably say Daryl Strawberry, Paul O'neill, Dwight Gooden, Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Keith Hernandez, or the Sandman. All great choices.

Nolan Ryan. As a diehard Mets fan, I damn near fainted when the Mets traded him for third baseman Jim Fregosi.
His accomplishments are all the more amazing since he pitched well into his 40's without the aid of steriods !
Over 5,000 K's and 7 no-hitters
