Think about it before you call it ridiculous. I have horses and some of them have light-colored skin on their faces where their hair is very thin, such as on the nose or around their eyes. If the skin is light-colored, it is very susceptible to sunburn. It will turn red, become inflamed, peel, and even blister. In this case, sunscreen becomes a necessity. I personally use my own sunscreen, not one specifically for animals, but there is a case in which this is not ridiculous.
I do understand your question though, I have seen some products on the market that I think are pretty outrageous, too.

First of all sun screen for pets is not ridiculous at all! Some pets have no protection from the sun on certain parts of their body and they can get sunburned just like we do. That means that they are also candidates for skin cancer like we are. It is the responsible pet owner who buys sun screen for pets in this instance.
I will agree that some items bought for pet are a little bit "over the top", nonsensical, and extravagant. Most of these people do not have family; their pets are their "children". So, I guess it is OK, in a way if they want to spend their extra money that way.

I have almost all white Jack Russell. At first I thought nothing of sunscreen until she stayed outside one summer day and ended up with a sunburn. So now during the summer I do apply sunscreen to prevent her from getting a burn. She was in a lot of pain from the sunburn so I will never let that happen again.

I use sunblock on our sharpei. She is cream colored with very little hair on her face. She spends a lot of time in the garden and has freckles splattered all around her eyes and on her nose. Every time I bathe her, I notice more and more freckles, so now it's more sunblock and less time out in the sun for her.
I do agree with you that some people tend to get quite ridiculous when it comes to their pets though. Too much time on their hands, I guess.

As the one time owner of 2 white Boxers who I took boating often, I don't consider it ridiculous, I considered it being responsible & sensitive to my pets needs.
Now a Tutu & frilly headband would be ridiculous things.

I have a pot belly pig- she requires sun screen. I enjoy spoiling my pets because they are always grateful and never want to return anything. They don't demand or expect. Ridiculous is shopping for someone because your are expected to; who will put it in a drawer, never to be seen again.

I haven't bought stuff like sunscreen for my pets but I do know that for albino animals like albino horses sunscreen is very helpful to prevent their sensitive skin from burning so if your pet needs it buy it.

I use fly spray with sunscreen for my horses. One has pink skin and is prone to getting a sunburn. Especially on the nose.

My friend used to have to buy suncream for her horse. The horse was white and has a pink muzzle that regularly used to get burned in the summer.
