The Coldest Winter Ever - Sista Soulja
The Bluest Eye - Toni Morrison
I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings - Maya Angelou
Lilih's Brood - Octavia E. Butler (This sister is the first best selling black female sci fi writer)
Genevieve - Eric Jerome Dickey
To read these books is like a black teen's rite of passage. You simply have to read Toni Morrison, Richard Wright, Maya Angelou, Sista Soulja, etc etc before you die!

If the teen is inclined toward the sci-fi or fantasy genres I would recommend Octavia E. Butler. She is brilliant and has written books in other genres as well…
