You know basically I really don't care about the original purpose. The fact remains that we are all on this God forsaken planet together and if we as human being don't start acting human, we might as well be the scavengers floating face down in the ocean. United We Stand! Divided We Fall! I say we divide the evil from the good! No matter what skin color a person is! It's so much hatred in this world just from this one topic alone. And guess what? I'm glad I'm not a hater! Because I get to smile more and be happy more. *sigh* skin colour was shaped by environmental exposure over time. There was no original purpose. The Tower of Babel only provided the impetus for each group moving to a different spot.
The only "biblical" origin of the races supposedly came from Ham and was used as a justification for slavery. Personally I think its a flawed interpretation.

The concept of racism came around when people meeting other "colours" for the first time didnt appreciate their behaviour and viewed them as barbaric. Europe didnt quite go so far as to indulge in slavery having changed it mostly in form to something slightly more palatable "serfs" in their view until sadly the Africans re-introduced the Europeans to it. They justified the abuse of the Africans by saying hey - we arent forcing them to sell us slaves and capture their brothers - the Africans are abusing each other of their own free wills - thus they are barbaric - thus we need to enlighten them - but since they are being abused we might as well take advantage of the barbarians and enlighten them at the same time ;)

But to answer yer question - no it wasnt necessary nor is it necessary - but cultural misunderstandings lead to it.

Um... actually Starry Eyes it STILL is like that. It might not be as bad as it was before, but under the surface... the issue is still there. For instance there are so many racial jokes floating around. Race is always going to be an issue, no matter what. It's just the way some people are :/
