It's causing him a lot of pain and making him cry a lot - something he doesn't do much at all. Is there anything we can do to ease the "flow", so to speak.

My son had the same problem and he had to get an operation when he was 3 for a hernia. Try Prune Juice or consult his Dr. for a laxative. They gave him Glycolax.

Several things:

Epsom Salt bath - I dissolve about a handful of epsom salt into my kids bath when they are constipated. Epsom Salt is largely magnesium, which softens.

Magnesium by mouth - I have crushed up a magnesium tablet or opened a capsule, wet the tip of my pinky finger and dipped it into the powder and then put it in the child's mouth. It doesn't taste good, but that small amount followed with some juice can be very helpful.

Blueberries are high in magnesium too - you could give the child blueberries.

Fennel tea is supposed to be very good for digestive issues. I use a product with Catnip and Fennel in it that helps. It tastes like licorice, but it also works great if you rub some on the feet (then cover with socks) or on the stomach (i put it where the diaper covers to minize mess) and that works very well. When they were small babies this is what I used most and it had very fast results. Here's the link:

Walking helps move the bowels too. There is a pressure point on the heal that is a great trigger for that.

Peace!

PS - Prune Juice! Of course! Or even pureed prunes (gerber makes a yummy one with prunes and something else). I block prune juice in my mind due to a childhood incident that's been told over and over in my family - my mother was told to give us 1/2 a bottle of prune juice. She bought a bottle of prune juice and proceeded to feed us 1/2 of that bottle, resulting in messy, out of control consequences. It seems the dr. meant 1/2 of a baby bottle of prune juice...lol!

That's another thing - think about the causes. Do you give Rice Cereal? That can be super binding. Oat Cereal or Barley is much easier on a child's system. You might also want to limit bananas, cheese, wheat germ and processed white bread.

I know how you feel, my daughter has been having crazy constipation for about 1 1/2 now. You know, you should try feeding him oatmeal cereal. Whenever I give that to her she feels better. Since he is gassy try and give him a bit of gripe water.
Its hard on parents to see their child in pain.
Drs say to give a lot of fiber and juice and water. My baby has all those in her diet but she is still constipated. It's so bad that there is sometimes blood in her poo.. But u know what... I find giving her the oatmeal and soup really helps...
Hope I helped.

Don't feeds him any bad foods. I have an 18 month old and he's NEVER had fast food, fried foods, or any packaged junk. You need to give him high fiber fruits and cereals. My son eats high fiber cereal every morning and he thinks they're cookies. Also, you may try prune juice with water for now.

Increase fluid intake. Fruit juices are great, water also. Cut back on milk, and dairy products. Walking also helps things to move the right direction. Good luck!

Well hes probably too young for laxatives, so I've lay off cheese and perhaps give him prunes or prune juice. If none of those things work I'd contact a doctor.

Orange juice worked wonder for my daughter at a younger age. You can also try a few drops of olive oil in his food if it's that severe. And massaging his guts gently to help with bowel movements.

Try some watered-down apple juice, and also give him more water. I'm not sure what fruits are diuretics other than apples, but you can also look for more on www.babycenter.com or something of the like. If it keeps happening, I'd talk to his pediatrician.
