A.) it is called semi-conservative replication. They found this out by using 'heavy' nitrogen template and allowed replication to occur with 'light' nitrogen containing nucleotides.

At the end they didn't have two different weights they had one weight which was consistant with one chain of 'heavy' and one chain of 'light'
