It is a term in science fiction movies that means at the speed of light. Warp 2 is twice the speed of light.

"Warp speed" is an exponential function. Above Warp Factor One, the speed increases as the square of the previous factor. Warp Factor Two is twice the speed of light and Warp Factor Three is four times the speed of light. Warp Factor Four is sixteen times the speed of light. Carry it out to Warp Factor Ten, which is the top speed of the Enterprise.

Warp speed is a fictional construction. The speed of light is the fastest anything can ever go because to go faster would require more and more fuel as to take every source of energy the Universe has in it.

Warp speed isn't friction
It is a speed faster than the speed of light
warp 1 = 1 times than light
2 warp = >>>>>>><>>>

Although Warp Speed is a fictional measurement, it is actually defined as s(w) = w3c

which would mean -
warp 2 = 2^3 * c = 8c
warp 3 = 3^3 * c = 27c
etc....

It's amazing how few 'Trekoids' really understand Warp Speed. In the original series, the Warp Factor had to be cubed to get the actual speed (in terms of number of times lightspeed). In the 'Next Generation', 'Deepsh!t-9', and 'Voyager' series, a totally new system was used.

As virtually everyone here has said, "warp speed" is an invented term in science fiction. But the word "warp" certainly comes from the physical fact that at relativistic speeds, space does look pretty warped. There's lots of websites that explore this, here's one:

It was invented by the creators of the Sci-Fi show Star Trek. Most people assume that warp 2 means twice the speed of light. It can't be explained since it's fiction.

Warp drive distorts space shortening the distance between two points. This means you get there faster. It takes a lot of energy to bend space which is why you need an anti-matter/ matter reaction. The only sustance known to man that can channel anti-matter is dilithium crystals. The anti-matter doesn't actually touch the crystals, an intense magnetic field in the crystals keeps the anti-matter from touching the lattice.

It's a plot device used in sci-fi shows to get around the issue of it taking millions of years to go from planet A to planet B. Once you have ships that can travel faster than the fastest thing ever ever, you can do a whole lot more with the storyline.

fictional, it is the speed at which you no long travel from point a to point b in a straight line
but take another path....
