I am about to start a new job, and I really think this is the place I want to make my career. Does anyone have any tips for promoting in the work place? Right now I am working as a clerk, but eventually I would like to obtain my degree in Communications and move into the Public Relations Department. Any tips would be useful, at the work place and in my personal life. Thanks!

be work focused! Try not to take days off just because. Do over and beyond your job. Ask questions! It shows to the boss that you are interested in the job. Come early and stay a little late. Pick up or clean around the work place when you see that it has to be done...whether you are on or off the clock. Dress correctly for your job. Customer service is a must! Show customers that you want to be there to help or assist them....with a smile on your face at all times. Keep home issues at home! Good luck with your career!

Do the job that you are in without fail and try to get the attention of the managers in the department you want to move up into. Try to get the word out through your coworkers that you are studying and soon will earn your degree in Communications which will give you the ability to do much more for the company. Word of mouth goes a long way.

Dress for the job you want, not the job you have. Don't complain, and don't gossip. Be nice to, and communicate with, everyone. Volunteer for overtime or extra work. Ask lots of questions to find out how every department runs, not just your own. Always come in a few minutes early. Try not to look bored :)

Good luck!!!! I wish you speedy promotions!

People who get promoted have some thinigs in common...

- they are known to the people who make the promotion decisions
- other people (e.g. their peers) like them and recommend them for the position
- they demonstrate they can do the job even before having the official role...e.g. even as a clerk, you could help the PR department identify opportunities to promote the company, but do it in consultation with the department, not in competition :)
- they are seen as sociable, dependable and take the initiative
- they look for opportunities to improve their skills though classes etc

Good luck in your new job!

Be the best you can at whatever you do and network, establish enduring relationships across the companies different departments. Try to be nice with the folks around you but never ever lower your guard or be seen to be vulnerable.

Always stay alert and represent yourself well in meetings and interactions with the rest of the staff.

Get Known by your seniors! 'Dinner Diplomacy' helps. Good interpersonal skills, dependable, smart, aware, etc etc.......we all know these qualities. So dont be lazy and start inculcating these qualities at the earliest. And be ready for a GRADUAL change in your thinking. And dont forget to have a burning desire to grow and achieve. Live in the PRESENT, with an eye on the future goals. All the best. :)

Try to be helpfull. When you have a problem that you need your boss input or help, bring also some solutions that you think... more like: 'This customer says that product A has this thing wrong, but I think we can offer him this solution' rather than 'Customer A is b!tching as usual, please do something about it'. If you say No to something, try to sustentate it, like 'sorry, I can't take this proyect because I'm working on this other, what proyect do you want me to follow up?'.

Hooking up with the boss or bosses is the quickest route. That is if you are hot. If you are a slob then forget about it as you will always be a clerk until you either:
1 lose weight
2 get plastic surgery
3 have a boob job

Good luck though

Keep asking a lot of questions about the functions of the company, learn all you can while you are there, and always look to volunteer for projects and for new challenges to work on.
