That depends on what you are writing and what will be done with it. If it will be bound in some way, you need slightly larger margins on the left. For some purposes 3/4" all around is plenty. For whom are you writing this? Is there a style guide you are supposed to follow? There is not just one way for a paper to look, but 1" all around is common.

It does in the APA writing style.
"Your essay should be typed, double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5 X 11 inches) with margins of 1 inch on all sides. Your final essay should include, in the order indicated below, as many of the following sections as are applicable, each of which should begin on a separate page

If you're asking how to do it, in MS Word, click "File" then select "Page Setup." A window should open with the "Margins" tab selected, there should be a list that says "Top, Bottom, Left, Right, Gutter," with a text box next to it, clear what is in there and just type in a "1," then hit OK

I used to put only left side one inch margin.
