The starting pay for a Pharmacy tech varies on the setting. Retail vs hospital. It has been my experiece since I am a pharmacist and have worked both settings that a tech is paid better in the hospital setting. That wage depending on experience is between 9.50 and 12.50. And of course it also depends on if you are a certified pharmacy technian. Which is becoming more and more a requirement. In the retail setting the wage (at least here in St. Louis) is lower to start out. The starting wage can be as low as 7.00 and as high as 9.00. I can tell you that at Walgreen's they have 2 levels of a pharmacy tech. A normal tech and a Lead Tech. Obviously there is a pay differential between the 2 positions. If you are going to school for certification I would definately go the hospital route. Why pay $ 20,000 plus dollars to get certified only to get a job starting out at 7.00 - 9.00 an hour in the retail setting. Of course these figures are also can fluctuate on the "desperation" of the the hiring outlet. The reason for the increase in pay in the hospital setting is for the fact that you are utilizing your talents to their maximum. Making I.V.'s assisting in the making of nuclear type drugs used in chemo therapy , the delivering of drugs to the various floors throughout the hospital, (called a pixis machine)stationed in every department on every floor.I hope this was helpful to you. If you have the intellegence and are able to get financing and think that you can get into Pharmacy school I HIGHLY recommend going that route. There is a HIGH demand and the starting pay ranges from $80,000 to $90,000+.

Depends, for uncertified pharmacy tech in retail between $8 and $9 per hour and for certified, $10-$11 per hour. For hospital, starting pay is about $10 per hour. These values really do vary.
