The reason I ask is because I see such a variety in price. They go for 10-200 dollars, and the principle is much the same in all of them. Does anyone have experience with one that is really solid, rugged and portable enough? On that note are they really worth getting, i.e., are they more effeicent then smoking? Thanks a bunch

There are two types of vaporizers:

1/ Steam vaporizer.
It heats up the water and turns water into steam. The sprayer disperses vapor into the room. It has to be cleaned once in a while depending on the water in your area. It there are lots of minerals in the water. It will deposit on the electrodes of the heating element. You can get a cleaner for that.
Since the water is heated and therefore contains very little bacteria. But watch out if you have small children at home. If they spill the water, they can get burned easily because it is hot.

2/Cool Mist vaporizer.
This type has a sprayer that disperses fine water mist into the air. You have to make sure the water is clean and have the water container cleaned regularly. This is because the water is not heated. Any bacteria in the water will be spreaded around.
This one is safer if you have small children around. If spilled, The worst is just getting wet.

The price difference depends on the feature you want. The bigger one will cover a larger area. You pay more if you want to get the whistles and bells. From a practical approach, get a small potty-shape one from any drugstore. They can be had for both types. It is small, solid and economical. Note that this type will normal cover a single room.
