what is the best way to clean my cupboards? they look like they have a fake wood look, probably vinyl cover, and I tried to wash it down and now it looks faded, whitish almost, is some areas. Mistake. Is there something I can do to make it look like dark brown wood again? I tried oil soap and it worked at first, now it looks bad again.

use furniture polish. Worked on my cabinets and you can even get some that will darken the light places just be sure to polish until dry

Have you considered paint,If so there is a tool you can get when you buy your paint that can put the look of the grain back on the doors I'm not sure what it's called but it's made of rubber and has lines on it sort of squiggly you pull it down thru the paint rocking ,or rolling as you go, It makes it look like genuine piece of wood. IT sounds hard but it's not. Ask them at the store I'm sure they will show you how .I learned at LOWES.

first, give them a thorough cleaning with TSP to remove all the built-up residue. then i would suggest painting because i had cupboards like yours and i never could get rid of that cloudy haze that covered them. be sure and sand the cupboards very lightly first, just to scuff them up a bit, then use a high quality, high-adhesion primer followed by 2 coats of a semi-gloss latex enamel paint.
