Yes, twins can be overlooked with early ultrasounds.

HOWEVER, keep in mind that the second pregnancy will be different than your first. Also, things like the gender of the baby could play a role in how you feel during the pregnancy. I had twins and had no real symptoms (except morning sickness). So I didn't find out until my first ultrasound at 21 weeks.

I don't think it's very likely that they would miss a baby. I am 17 weeks pregnant with twins and I had my first check up at 11 weeks and my Dr. knew right away that I was having twins by the height of my uterus. He also did an ultrasound that day and confirmed twins. I love the fact that I am having twins. It's a bit more exciting for me to know that there are two in there moving around and growing together. I also get to have an ultrasound every time I go to the Dr. because I'm considered a "high risk" because theres two babies. Good luck tomorrow. You are going to have a blast with your baby girl.

It is possible to miss a twin during an ultrasound. However, it does not happen often. At your early stage of pregnancy it is the heart beat that is most obvious during the ultrasound and it is hard to miss 2 heart beats. Being sicker and having back pain with a second pregnancy is not unusual and is not an indicator of twins. Each pregnancy is different. My first pregnancy was uneventful and "by the book" from beginning to end. My second one, I was sick all 9 months, he was born 11 days past his due date, I had back labor, and he had to be delivered by forceps.

Yes it is possible, because sometimes one twin will hide behind the other. However, you are likely just having a normal pregnancy with just one child.

Every pregnancy is different - on one you will get sick, another not sick at all. Back pain could be because your muscles are "giving up the cause" sooner, having been trained by your last pregnancy as to what's coming.

To be sure, at your next visit, have the doc do the heatbeat monitor. If you have twins in there, ther will be two heartbeats in your tummy. Another ultrasound will confirm this.

I would doubt it because they should have picked up two fetal poles and two seperate heart beats. Plus, just having different symptoms isn't a reason to think twins. If you are within two years of having your first, you have a 67% higher chance of having more sever pregnancy symptoms. As far as your back pain, my doctor told me because the uterus growth isn't as slow as it was the first pregnancy and your body can't keep up with the quick changes. I am only having one and I am STILL sick and I am 17 weeks, been put on pain meds for my back because it hurt so bad. My daughter is only 14 months and I am nearly 5 months pregnant. I never so much as had a upset stomach my entire pregnancy with my first. It's a different pregnancy, with different symptoms! Good Luck though!

Do women who are pregnant with twins, triplets or more exhibit special "symptoms"? Yes ... and no. Just as individual women experience a wide range of symptoms with a singleton pregnancy, so the conditions vary with multiples.

It's true that the morning sickness, exhaustion and weight gain can be intensified in proportion to the number of babies -- twice as sick, three times as tired, or four times as many pounds! But, some lucky moms experience only mild discomfort, so mild that they never even suspect they are carrying multiples.

What are some of the signals of a multiple pregnancy?

Although it differs from woman to woman, some of the more common indications are:

* Weight Gain

Early weight gain of up to ten pounds in the first trimester can result due to increased blood volume and uterine size.

By the end of the second trimester, most mothers of twins have gained fifteen to twenty-five pounds, whereas singleton pregnancies usually produce gains of ten to twenty pounds.

Severe morning sickness symptoms, including nausea and vomiting: Some moms of multiples do report that their symptoms were increased with twins, as opposed to their singleton pregnancies. Melissa, mom of fraternal twins born in 2001, remembers "I did have morning sickness with the twins, and did not have any at all with my two older sons. I lost 5 pounds during the first trimester." Nevertheless, she didn't learn she was carrying twins until three hours before delivery!

On the other hand, a mom of triplets reports, "I can't say that I noticed any big difference between my daughter and the triplets. I was actually sicker with my daughter than now with the 3."

If you suspect you are having multiples -- due to the enhanced symptoms described here, or other "gut" feelings -- talk to your medical provider. The only way to know for sure if you are carrying more than one baby is a thorough ultrasound performed by a trained professional in the second trimester.

Listening for dual heartbeats is tricky even for the most experienced obstetricians, even with Doppler technology. And an early sonogram isn't conclusive either. I have the pictures to prove it! My seven-week sonogram showed one perfect bean-sized bubble. (My now nine-year-old identical girls have always been skilled at playing hide-and-seek!)

I have heard that it can happen but not that often. I' m in the sixth month of my second pregnancy and it is been completely different all around. I'm carrying lower, I was less sick this time though thank God. I am showing at six months with this one like I did at nine months with my first son. I am having only one boy.

Yes twins have been overlooked at with early ultra sounds.
No two pregnancies feel the same, feeling more symptoms doesn't mean more babies darlin, if that were true I would have had Quintuplets my first time around! lol
Try saltine crackers upon waking, it really helps with nausea.
Also if you like Black licorice, the natural Panda brand helps w/ sickness, careful though also has laxative properties. Good luck, congratulations, hang in there!

The ultrasound was probably right. Even at 7 weeks the doctor would have seen two babies. Good luck with your pregnancy.
