There is nothing wrong whatsoever about being popular, in and of itself. My husband and I were both very introverted (not UNpopular, just not part of the in crowd) throughout school, so it was a little bit of a shock when our son, now 7, turned out to be one of the "popular" kids. The thing is, the other kids like him for all the right reasons, reasons I'm proud of: he's kind to them, he cares about how they feel, and he's funny & fun to be around. It's a gift and one that I'm glad he has. What matters is how you use it. It is never OK to use your popularity to exploit other people, and some popular people do, as we all know, sometimes in very cruel ways. By the same token, it is perfectly OK to say "I just don't feel like hanging out today" or "there is other stuff I need to be doing" if you believe the other person is not really interested in you, but in your value as a step in the social ladder.
But I would definitely say popularity is overrated. You do not need to be one of the in-crowd to have a successful life. In fact, if you get too used to it, it can be a disadvantage, because sometimes the popular kids expect the social patterns established in high school to continue into their adulthood, and are not quite prepared when they have to establish networks of relationships all over again.
But having said that, if you can say with a clear conscience that you're not using your social status to hurt anybody else, and that nobody else is using your social status just to improve theirs, then enjoy the fact that people seem to like you and don't give it a second thought! It's probably because you're a nice person.

It's not bad so as long as you keep a level head. You can be popular but be wise and know who you let to be your close friends and the ones that are just acquaintances. Because some people might just want to use you to become popular and just end up making your life hell. Stay wise!
