potable water is fit for drinking and contains salts and minerals and some roughages too.
but distilled water is a pure form of water that contains no salts, minerals or roughages. distilled water is mainly used in chemistry labs.

I agree to most of what has been already provided ion the above answers. In addition, potable water can have certain harmless impurities and free ions, i.e. it can conduct electricity. That is why one must not extinguish a fire by water because there are chances of short circuit.
On the other hand, distilled water cannot conduct electricity, because it has no impurities and no free ions since for every 2 molecules of Hydrogen there is 1 molecule of oxygen to complete H2O.

Poatable water means water fit for human consumption. It can be fresh untreated water also. Or certain water like lake, stream, river, underground water is made fit by filtration, reverse osmosis and chlorination.
Distillation is a process that involves boiling of water and then collecting its vapours and condensing them back to liquid form i.e. water itself. In this process only the water gets distilled its impurities are left behind (except for trace amounts) and the water becomes pure. This water is generally used in car batteries, in chemistry labs for experiments, pharma industry such other industries.
So distilled water is always pota ble but potable water is not always distilled.

Potable water is water meant for people to drink. It doesn't have some undersirable properties, like harmful bacteria, but it retains minerals and electrolytes that are need for humans.
Distilled water has been distilled such that is, for most purposes, pure water. No minerals. No electrolytes. Just H2O.
