I’ve never been fully able to wrap my mind around just what makes a person an otherkin. Does anyone out there have an idea? Also, if a person is an otherkin, how does this set them apart from the rest of humanity?

Otherkin are generally people who believe they have "non-human" souls. They may believe that their soul (or a part of it) is something other than human such as animal, extraterrestrial, or a "mythological" being. Many also consider vampires to be otherkin, although some think of them as a different group of people. The only thing that sets them apart is what they believe about who/ what they really are. Otherkin are physically human, but spiritually something else.
Werecreatures are also a type of otherkin. They are the ones who believe that at least part of their soul is an animal.

these people are probably right, having found the definition some where. But I was under the impression that otherkin were an folktale creature that would sometimes, if the mother did this that or the other thing "wrong" during pregnancy, replace an unborn babe with its own child, or maybe it was itself. The otherkin wouldn't grow but could speak and was a clever demon that could not be killed easily. Lettssssseeee. If I remember correctly, to get rid of one you must spill milk or something, on the hearth with the child beside the milk. There was something about an eggshell, placing the baby in the egg shell as you do the milk thing, I believe. Hence why I'm sure its a folk tale, or a faerie tale. The creature would end up laughing itself and in doing so decide to leave the home, placing the real baby back with its mother.

Otherkin is a subculture made up of people who describe themselves as being non-human or having a connection to a mythical archetype in some way, usually believing themselves to be mythological or legendary creatures, or descended from such.

Otherkin
Otherkin is a subculture made up of people who describe themselves as being non-human or having a connection to a mythical archetype in some way, usually believing themselves to be mythological or legendary creatures. The word is a neologism primarily used by members of that subculture, and is somewhat fluid in definition, and in its broadest sense includes those who consider themselves to be animals, aliens, extradimensional beings, and any other non-human entities.
