I agree Dick Butkus, was the greatest and the meanest. He made Mean Joe Greene look like a sissy boy!

I'd say LT all the way. Of course, perhaps I'm partial being a Giants fan but Lawrence Taylor redefined the linebacker position. He's the one that started stripping the ball from the QB in the middle of a sack.
I'm not old enough to remember players like Dick Butkus or Jack Lambert although I know they were both incredible.
Alan Page would have to be up there as well.

Considering the different positions it would be hard to pick just one because of the different duties that each position entails...Defensive Back= Ronnie Lott Linbacker= Dick Butkus Line= Lawrence Taylor

That is a very difficult question to answer as defensive players have differant responsibilities depending on the position they play. Deacon Jones was a monster in his time, as was Merlin Olsen on the defensive line but they played differantly because of where they played (end, tackle). I would not argue with any of the names so far put forth.

You all are kidding yourselves with your answers. The one and only answer is Ronnie Lott in the '80s. The man cut off the tip of his finger so he could play the game without losing playing time. That takes dedication. Not only that but his stats, his hard hitting, and his determination to the kill the guy that came in his zone.

no offense to any 49er fans but Ronnie Lott didn't hit as hard as jack Tatum. i was born in 83 and i know who jack Tatum is. Deon is the prototype corner these days just a shut down guy who can't tackle. i think it is Lawrence Taylor because he revolutionized his position unlike anyone else.

Lawrence Taylor. He redefined the outside linebacker position. He was the first defensive superstar.
