this sucks big time! if you are still a virgin it might be that you aren't used to having anything up there. so if your still a virgin you might not be able to use it.but my suggestion is read all the instructions carefully and squat down to apply the tampon. it probably hurts because you are inserting it wrong.

The way to use tampon
Sit or stand in a comfortable position. Some women prefer to place one leg on the toilet seat or tub, while others prefer to squat down. After you find a position that is most comfortable for you, hold the tampon with the fingers that you write with. Hold the middle of the tampon, at the spot where the smaller, inner tube inserts into the larger, outer tube. Make sure the string is visible and pointing away from your body.
With your other hand, open the labia (the folds of skin around the vaginal opening) and position the tampon in the vaginal opening.
Gently push the tampon into the opening, aiming for the small of your back. Stop when your fingers touch your body and the applicator, or outer tube, is completely inside the vagina.
Once the applicator or outer tube is inside of you, use your index finger to push the inner tube (the tube where the removal string is connected) through the outer tube.
Once the inner tube is all the way in, use your thumb and middle finger to remove the applicator or outer tube. Make sure that the string hangs outside of the vaginal opening. Later, when you are ready to remove the tampon, hold the string and gently pull it downward until the entire tampon is out.

Sunflare63 is absolutely right! Adding some lubricant like vaseline to the outside of the applicator will help it go in. I suggest buying a brand that offers a teen size with a plastic applicator and rubbing a little vaseline on the outside of the applicator. When I was 11 and just started using tampons I was TINY! This was back before they even had plastic applicators, so I had to put the vaseline on the tip of the tampon sticking out of the cardboard applicator and on the cardboard itself. After the first few days it was much easier to insert them.
Another important thing is that you may be a little nervous and this is tensing up your muscles. If you've already tried squatting, putting your foot on the toilet seat, and spreading your legs wide while sitting and those don't work then try laying on your bed with your knees bent and relaxing as much as you can.
This last bit may seem like stupid advice, but don't forget to take the applicator out, afterwards. The woman who drove me to buy my first tampons (not my mom--I guess she was too embarrassed) told me that when she first tried them she didn't know to take out the applicator until she asked her friends how they could walk around with it inside them!
Good luck in the competition!! :)

You need to relax and look at the instructions. Most likely you are trying to insert it straight in and if you look at the diagram it show inserting it at a bit of an angle. Try laying on your bed and relaxing before you try to insert it. If you still have problems use your finger to help guide and feel where you want to insert the tampon. Do not think this is gross as it is your body and the only way you are going to learn about your body is by checking it out. Once inserted you shouldn't really feel the tampon. Also since you sound young try using the junior sized tampons and see if that is easier for you. Plastic applicators are easier to use than cardboard applicators.

There are many types tampons.. What kind are you using? I know for sure that Tampax carries a teen version Which are smaller in width. Look for this kind. Try one that is for light days also because they tend to be smaller and you can change it mre frequently.
Good luck tomorrow!

u need to get some olive oil or vaseline or baby oil and put on the end of the tampon so it will slide easy.
Tampons are rough at first, but keep trying and then u will laugh realizin it was so easy.
